How to write a great paragraph
A good paragraph is like a hamburger: a top bun, the tasty middle, and a bottom bun.
1. Topic sentence (top bun)
Tell the reader what the whole paragraph is about, in one clear sentence.
"Dogs make wonderful pets for families."
2. Supporting details (the middle)
Give 2 or 3 reasons, facts or examples that back up your topic sentence. Add a little detail to each one.
"They are loyal and love to play. Many dogs can learn tricks, like sitting or fetching a ball. Dogs also get families outside for walks every day."
3. Closing sentence (bottom bun)
Wrap it up by saying your main idea again in new words.
"With all that fun and friendship, it's easy to see why so many families love their dogs."
Helpful linking words
These make your sentences flow: first, also, another reason, for example, because, in the end, that's why.
Check your paragraph
- Does every sentence talk about the same main idea?
- Did you give at least two details?
- Does each sentence start with a capital letter and end with punctuation?
- Read it out loud. Does it sound smooth?
Try one yourself
Write a paragraph about your favorite season. Start with a topic sentence like "Summer is the best season of the year." Then give two reasons why.
