Area and perimeter, made easy
Perimeter is the distance around a shape. Area is the space inside it. That's the whole difference!
Perimeter: walk around the edge
Add up the lengths of all the sides.
A rectangle 6 cm long and 4 cm wide
6 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 20 cm. Shortcut for rectangles: 2 × (length + width) = 2 × 10 = 20.
Area: count the squares inside
For a rectangle, multiply length × width. The answer is in square units, like cm².
6 cm × 4 cm = 24 cm²
If you drew 1 cm squares inside, you'd fit 6 in each row and 4 rows: 24 squares.
Squares and triangles
- Square: all sides are equal. Area = side × side. Perimeter = 4 × side.
- Triangle: Area = 1/2 × base × height. A triangle is half of a rectangle, so it's half the area.
Triangle: base 8, height 5
1/2 × 8 × 5 = 1/2 × 40 = 20 square units.
Try one yourself
A square with sides of 7 m
What's its perimeter? What's its area? Hint: one answer is in m and one is in m².
Common mistakes
- Mixing them up. Perimeter = fence around a yard. Area = grass inside it.
- Forgetting "squared" units for area (cm², m²).
- Forgetting the 1/2 for triangles.
